Composition selected for the Sydney International Piano Competition 2023

My latest composition The Reckoning- after the tale of The Red Shoes (2022), has been selected for the Preliminary Round Recital in the Sydney International Piano Competition 2023 as a new Australian work. Performers are at liberty to choose any two of the three movements to suit the time requirements of the competition. The music is available through Wirripang Publications - where a full midi rendition can also be heard.

The mix of dark and dangerous elements with fantasy and beauty is what has made fairy-tales and myths so compelling and enduring as universal teaching tales all over the world. The old tale of The Red Shoes has been told in various versions, in many lands. The Reckoning is a psychic narrative inspired by the tale which may pique our curiosity about human nature and behaviour.

Private Piano Tuition

Piano lessons will be given in “real life” again when restrictions are lifted, but not before schools open again on November 8th 2021. Both my Katoomba and Penrith Conservatorium studios have COVID safe precaution plans in place. Meanwhile we are moving ahead with increasing success and ease on Zoom.

When we return face to face lessons, zooming is the way to go for any students who feel less than 100% well. The lesson in your allocated time can go ahead on fairly short notice

For details of my COVID safe plan please read below

COVID safe plan for 2020 & 2021

Plan for maintaining health & safety during Corona Virus Pandemic

Dear students please follow these simple instructions:

1.   Arrive in good health for the lesson

2.   Wash your hands immediately before your lesson & apply the hand sanitiser provided

3.   Leave all food, drink and unnecessary items outside the studio

4.   Wait outside the studio before your lesson while I sanitise the piano keys, music shelf & table. Allow a few moments for the room to ventilate before entering

5.   Place your music on your end of the table we share. Open the book at the current homework instructions

6.   Get your own pencil ready to mark fingering & corrections on the music, and have your own pen ready to write your homework instructions during the lesson

7.   When I’m demonstrating something for you, stand up to watch me play the other piano. This way, distance between us can be upheld

8.   Pack up your music quickly after the lesson is over. This will assist me to move ahead with the cleaning process for the next student

If you have a cold, fever or any flu symptoms, please do not enter the studio. In the event of ill health, lessons should be arranged via Zoom. The lesson will take place in your allocated time. This is available on fairly short notice.

Note: if I am experiencing symptoms of ill health, I will arrange to give you your lesson via Zoom from my home studio, unless I am bedridden.

Thank you for your co-operation during these challenging periods.

Canto Latino Gig Update - until we’re back on the stage!

Last November we had a ball giving a performance at the wonderful Cowra Civic Centre with its grand piano and excellent stage - albeit presented with Covid audience number restrictions.

Sadly we’ve had some really exciting performance opportunities cancelled this year and last, but we remain hopeful to play together again sooner or later.

Current composition projects

There’s been new interest in my work “Gardens of Stone”. A very exciting version has been created by Dr Steven Stanke for full symphony orchestra. This performance will be given by Symphony Central Coast under his baton with myself at the piano. Steven’s arrangement gives the original 11 minute work (for piano & didjeridu) a whole new sense of grandeur and drama - like a Hollywood film score! We hope the free outdoor event on the Central Coast will go ahead in February 2022 as planned.

I’ve also just completed and published an arrangement of Gardens of Stone for bass clarinet & piano for performances by renowned musicians Ros Dunlop & David Miller. Another version has also just been published by Wirripang for cello & piano.

Meanwhile “Vulcan” is brewing up. It’s an exciting large scale piano-based ensemble composition.  The artistic concept has been in inception for many years now and I’m feeling really excited to have a crew of amazing artists on board. Vulcan will be recorded and launched in a Blue Mountains Theatre production when the pandemic situation is resolved. Who knows when this will be?? … and in the meantime the work progresses on the drawing board. I look forward to bringing this creative dream to fruition! Stay posted.
